**Note - we are currently interviewing
working students. If you are interested, please email Natalie.
Waters Edge Farm
offers a comprehensive working student program. Working students
learn all aspects of horse care and all levels of training for
event horses. In addition to doing general barn work, our working
students learn to properly care for, condition and groom for
upper level horses. Working students also have opportunities
to ride several different horses (usually 3 to 4 a day) at all
levels of training from starting 2 year olds to Advanced level
event schoolmasters!

Our program is geared towards producing
quality horses and quality riders. We have had working students
from all over the country and abroad to train with us. There
is no better way to learn the horse business - especially for
the rider who is really serious about improving their riding!
Working students receive lessons most days and there are opportunities
to compete the farm's sale horses. They also get to experience
competition at all levels, and get hands-on experience helping
to run a boarding facility and sales program. WEF has former
working students all over the horse world working as trainers,
managers, riders, farriers, vet techs, and attending vet school!
WEF's working students are
not required to bring their own horse as there are
always several for students to ride, although a
student will have more competition opportunities
if they bring their own horse. If you bring a horse,
you will receive free field board or a reduced rate
on a stall. Working students live right on the farm
(housing provided) and work 5 and 1/2 days a week.
Be ready to work
hard and be prepared to be flexible! Horses do not
stick to a time schedule so sometimes extra hours
are required. No experience level of competition
is required, but riders are expected to be competent
with horses and to have had some experience working
around them. Working students do the barn work including
general care, feeding, turn out, mucking, tacking
up, grooming and other chores as they present themselves.
Applicants must be at least 15 years old, and they must have their own health insurance. A commitment of at least 3 months is recommended to get the most benefit from this program, although we encourage longer terms. We have had some students for over 3 years! At times, there are shorter summer spots or part-time weekend spots to fill. As long as you have a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a love of horses - we can teach you the rest! These positions are limited so it is best to plan in advance if you are interested in applying. We encourage potential working students to come stay with us for a few days to learn more about the farm and the job.
